(ENG) THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH - The Parish of Waplewo dedicated to Saint Stanisław, Bishop and Martyr

The free Prussians: Scabot, Nadrau and Wapel accepted the rule of the the Tutonic Knights. The vassal Wapel (hence the name: Waplitz - Waplewo) was obliged by the Tutonic Knights to build a church in this place in the  XIV century, which burnt down during the war between Poland and the Tutonic Knights around the year 1414. The church was rebuilt in the XV century with brick and stone and the internal walls were lined with plaster made of clay. It was built in the oriental style with the side nave on the north and west side (probably for defensive reasons). There was a side entrance on the south side with a porch.
During the reformation an evangelical parish was established in Waplewo in 1612. In the years 1600-1831 Waplewo belonged to the aristocratic family Finck von Finckenstein. W XVII the church was rebuilt and a tower was added in the place of the porch in which a bell from the foundry of David Jonas from Elbląg was installed in 1681, which is used till the present day.
In 1783 the presbytery with the parish school burnt down and the evangelical pastor moved to Żelazno.
In 1842 a mechanical organ was made for the church in Waplewo by Johan Scherweit in Köningsberg. However the church as a subsidiary church fell into ruin. In the years 1870-1872 the church was rebuilt again. The tower was lowered, the stone foundations and sound parts of the walls were kept, new openings for windows were made and new upper walls and new lowered roof structure were built. New flying buttresses supporting the outer walls were added. The crypt under the church was restored where the local landowners and their families were buried.
In  XIX century services in the church were held in the polish language. After the II world war the church was once more taken over by the Catholic Church. The main parish was in Łyna, and the church in  Waplewo was a subsidiary church. In June 1981 the Bishop of Warmia at that time Józef Glemp created the parish of Waplewo dedicated to Saint Stanisław Bishop and Martyr. The chapel by the church commemorates the stay of Fr. Karola Wojtyła in July 1958 on a canoeing holiday on the river Marózka.
The following can be found in the church:
Stone baptismal font  XIV/XV century
Bell from 1681 and a second iron bell from the year 1872

Baroque pulpit 1750

Niech święta krew męczennika
Wiarę umacnia w narodzie,
Niech pokój pełen nadziei
Sercom w rozterce przywraca.
Niech Bogu w Trójcy Najświętszej
Będzie pokorna podzięka
Za Stanisława biskupa,
Wzór niezłomnego pasterza. Amen.
